Stories

Ancient Tradition

Every year, in memory of the passage of the soldiers following Napoleon across the Great St. Bernard Pass in 1800, they march among the villages of the Cumba freida. Bizarre masks, stunning colors, lavish costumes, all handmade, that sparkle in the sun. Time stands still, bringing people together in dances among the villages where food and drinks are offered. Among the characters of the traditional carnival we find the bear, which represents the coming of spring; the mule tails, which represent the winds and are used to ward off harmful air currents; the mirrors on the costumes, which are meant to drive away evil spirits; the color red, which symbolizes strength and vigor and also has the power to ward off curses and misfortunes.
